Diesel Polishing - Remove the Diesel Bug

'Diesel polishing' is the term used for cleaning diesel to ensure optimum quality and to reduce the potentially damaging effects of contaminants that can be found in fuel. At SB Marine Services we have specialist, mobile equipment that can be brought to your site to clean your fuel quickly and easily.

If you regularly use or self-store diesel, you've probably heard of diesel bug - but what is it and why is it a problem?

Diesel bug is essentially the result of a type of bacteria that is present in diesel fuel. While in itself it isn't a problem, as soon as the fuel gets contaminated by water, the bacteria, or bug, is able to breed. Unfortunately, diesel, as a bio fuel, has a greater ability to collect and absorb water, providing the perfect breeding ground for diesel bug to multiply, causing many different problems that can affect performance and the efficiency of diesel-fuelled machinery and equipment.

If you have your own fuel storage tanks or have vehicles or machinery that go unused for periods of time, the diesel they contain can become prone to contamination. Water can enter the fuel through the process of condensation, and bacteria, such as 'diesel bug', can start to breed and accumulate.

Water can enter diesel storage and fuel tanks either directly from the air or as condensation in the tank. This allows the bacterial bug cells to multiply - at a rate of 2 million times in 24 hours. After breeding, the diesel bug dies within 48 hours, falling to the bottom of your fuel storage tank, where the remnants sit as sludge.

If this contaminated fuel is subsequently used, filters can become blocked, injectors, seals and gaskets are at risk of damage and the performance and longevity of your vehicles or other diesel-fuelled equipment can be greatly affected.

Many diesel polishing services only treat the problem of diesel bug, rather than getting to the real heart of the issue. Our fuel polishing equipment not only removes diesel bug and any remains, but it also removes the root cause: water contamination in the fuel tank. We also filter out any other harmful contaminants, giving you fresh fuel and the confidence that your engine will be protected from the costly consequences of pollutants.
